Supersport Mk2 Race Report From Mid Ohio!

On the July 4th weekend the Supersport Mk2 made it’s North American racing debut at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course racing with NARRA in the GT1 class.  The competition in GT1 was all Dodge Viper Comp Coupes running V10 engines.

I was again surprised how much the performance bar is raised when you are racing a sanctioned event as opposed to testing at our home track.  I was also a bit surprised by the higher than expected level of competition from the very well driven and professionally prepared cars at NARRA.

Friday was a test day.  We started off running very old tires just to get a feel for the track and the car.  Craig Stanton, our pro driver, did a fantastic job  of getting up to speed quickly.  The second session was skipped to give the crew time to work on the other car we were supporting at the event.  One thing about NARRA, they give you lots and lots of track time for your buck!

For Friday’s third session we mounted new Hoosier tires.  Craig started pushing hard, running fast times but reported the handling was going away.  We returned to the trailer and started inspecting the car.  Another big surprise! The rear lower control arms are bent.  This is the first time we have run the car with improved aero for more downforce and stiffer rear springs.  The control arms were simply not able to handle the increased loads.  We decided to repair and reinforce the control arms, using the trailer landing gear as a press and straightened the arms. Craig went to Home Depot to acquire material to reinforce and strengthen the arms. A late night of cutting and grinding had everything ready for welding in the morning.  The repair and strengthening was rather agricultural but certainly appeared capable of doing the job.

We skipped Saturday’s warmup session and were ready for the qualifying session.  Craig was being very conservative, not being too sure of the control arm repairs and qualified 4th in class.  Inspecting after qualifying showed that indeed the repairs were all holding up just fine. Now we started setting the car up for the race.  Saturday’s race showed us right away that having the lowest horsepower but best handling car on the track was a challenge, especially with Craig’s instructions to “take it easy, we really want to run Sunday!”. Craig was held up by the cars ahead in the curvy bits but when he got to the straights the Viper’s top speed allowed them to pass. Without diving hard in the corners Craig could not negate their top speed advantage.  The half hour race was the longest we have run the Supersport Mk2 in anger.  Craig’s smooth consistent driving earned the car it’s first podium appearance!

Sunday dawned with new enthusiasm from both driver and crew.  Today we would push harder!  Spring changes, aero changes, shock changes, alignment changes, all were made.  After the morning warmup session Craig’s immediate response was “better, better, better!”.  For qualifying a new set of tires yielded Craig a quick time right out of the box.  We are fastest in our class so far so we sit in pit lane and watch the competition.  Craig says he has more left in the car.  On the last qualifying lap Saturday’s GT1 winner just nips us for the pole.  Craig says “No problem, I have plenty left”. He will get them on the start and push hard enough to gain enough in the corners to be able to maintain his position and move up.

On the race start Craig does a fantastic job easily passing the GT1 pole sitter on the outside and starts after a GTU car just ahead.  The GTU car is leaking lots of fluid and Craig cannot run too close without risking the car.  He is pulling away leading the GT1  class when the handling goes away.  He pits and the crew finds that the rear sway bar link is disconnected so we decide to retire.

We learned so much over the weekend.  First, we learned that Craig loves the car.  His common refrain after getting out of the car was “You have a really neat thing here” and “I just love driving this car!” Secondly, we are really close. We need to design and manufacture new rear control arms, thoroughly test them, and retrofit the existing cars free of charge.  Thirdly, racing will push us to refine our setups.  The car is very responsive to changes so optimizing it is achievable and easy to do and changes don’t kill the crew.

The engine, transmission, and electronics performed flawlessly and are proving to be state of the art and very reliable. This complete car is truly a drivers car.

As we work towards building our one-make series for the car we are enthusiastic and very confident that the Supersport Mk2 Spec Series will prove to be the best GT series for drivers on the planet.

North American Racing Debut!

Announcing the North American racing debut of the Supersport Mk2 at the NARRA US GT Championship GT1 race at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course July 3-5, 2015!

The 2 liter GM Ecotech GDI turbo will be up against some pretty stiff competition in the GT1 class, which is mostly V10 powered Dodge Vipers.  Fortunately the Mid Ohio track favors handling over horsepower which will help us!

Craig Stanton, one of North America’s top pro drivers will pilot the Supersport Mk2 around the fast and technical track.  This should be really fun to watch!

We would like all interested people to join us at Mid Ohio. Please note that this is not a spectator event so email Jackson Stewart and he will arrange a VIP Pass at the gate. Email [email protected].

Come See the Supersport Mk2 at Auto Club Speedway Saturday Jan. 10th!

The final developments to the Supersport Mk2 are complete! After the last test we determined that the engine required a larger intercooler to better control air inlet temperatures. The new larger intercooler was installed and was 100% successful on the dyno.

The performance of the Supersport Mk2 was proving to be so good that we decided using a better shock absorber would give us even better results. The new 2 way adjustable state of the art shock designed by Jerome van Gool of MCS gives us confidence that the performance of the Supersport Mk2 is absolutely the best it can be.

This coming Saturday, January 10th, we will be testing the Supersport Mk2 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA. Our professional driver Craig Stanton, who last drove the car at Big Willow, will be putting the Supersport Mk2 through it’s paces on the roval at Auto Club.  The event is a Speed Ventures track day which affords plenty of track time to thoroughly test and tune on the car.  This will be the first test with the new MCS shock absorbers and we are anticipating Craig will really like the new set up.

This test will be the final development test on the Supersport Mk2. After this the design and specs will be frozen for production.

Come on by Auto Club Speedway on Saturday, January 10th and let us show you the car and explain why we believe this car is the best value in racing today offering a level of performance that far exceeds the purchase price! We will be in the north end of Garage 2 all day and would enjoy showing you the car.

The “Race Ready” Supersport Mk2

The Supersport Mk2 is only sold “race ready”.  What do we mean by “race ready”? We mean that you literally can take delivery of the Supersport Mk2 and after spending the delivery day with us, take the car to the track and race it with all the tools to do well at your disposal.

A modern race car is a very complex machine.  The brain of that machine is the electronics.  The Supersport Mk2 is equipped with a state of the art Life Racing Electronics package, including the F88 GDI4 engine control unit, the PDU 32 power control unit, and a nifty touch pad switch panel.  Being truly race ready we include a full software suite providing professional level data analysis.  The Life Racing software is easy to learn and is capable of helping the driver and engineer answer all those questions that ultimately make the car and drive one running fast lap times consistently at every track.

Life Racing Screen Shot

The screenshot shows an example of a driver page.  Vehicle speed, gear, engine rpm, throttle position, brake pressure,  and longitude and latitude g-forces, along with oil pressure are shown on this screen.  The ability to reference the track map gives the driver the information he needs to really improve his lap times.  Dozens of other channels are available to closely monitor other systems.

The purchase of a Supersport Mk2 is only done direct, with no middlemen.  This helps us both insure the quality and keep the price low for the buyer.  Every Supersport Mk2 purchase includes a full day of track testing here at Willow Springs Raceway, training on maintenance procedures, and several hours of instruction to learn the use of the Life Racing software.

Our #1 goal is a customer leaving with his new Supersport Mk2 ready to compete and win!

Supersport Mk2 Runs Auto Club Speedway!

IMSA Continental Tire Challenge racer Rob Ecklin flew out to California to run the Supersport Mk2 in the Speed Ventures track day event at Auto Club Speedway. With the long off season just beginning, Rob wanted seat time in a GT race car with current technology and a state of the art drivers environment. Rob normally drives an Aston Martin in IMSA, so the Supersport Mk2 was a perfect choice to develop driving skills and learn a new track.

IMG_7269

After getting familiar with the Life Racing touchpad and XAP Electronique steering wheel display, Rob was ready to take the car out on track.

IMG_7386

Auto Club Speedway is a roval with lots of time on the banking and a very challenging twisty infield section. Speeds are high and Rob took it easy in the first session, learning both the track and the car.

IMG_7391

The 3MOP 6 speed sequentially shifted transmission makes shifting effortless. The Supersport Mk2 is paddle shifted with no lift upshifts and auto blip downshifts. “The shifting in this car is a luxury!” according to Rob!

IMG_7440

Designed as a pure GT race car, the Supersport Mk2 excels as a track day car. The car requires very little in the way of crew and support, and the data provided by the Life Racing electronics makes improving driver performance very easy. Every aspect of the engine, transmission, and braking systems are monitored and very clearly and easily read and analyzed after each session.

IMG_7419

The GM 2.0L Ecotech GDI turbo engine provides 420 horsepower and 420 lb./ft torque, more than enough to get around the banking.  According to Rob, “It was definitely fun to pull the Porsche’s!”

IMG_7402

IMG_7489

At the end of the day, Rob felt that he had gotten quality seat time in a car with performance equal to a Porsche GT3 Supercup car.  The purchase price of the Supersport Mk2 is less than half of the Porsche, with running costs less than ten cents on the dollar.  Rob and his IMSA co-driver plan to run the Supersport Mk2 as much as they can over the winter and also utilize it to practice at tracks that are on the IMSA schedule next year. For drivers wanting to keep sharp in the off season as well as between races, the Supersport Mk2 is unparallelled in the racing world.  999 Motorsports USA offers a program to keep your  Supersport Mk2 at our facility and run it at Willow Springs International Raceway whenever you desire at a moments notice.

IMG_7508

After the last session Rob was getting comfortable and fast. Our favorite comment of the weekend came from two Corvette drivers who came by to ask “How much horsepower does that f$#*ing thing have?”  Plenty, obviously!

Craig Stanton Tests the New Supersport Mk2!

Professional race car driver Craig Stanton came out to Willow Springs International Raceway yesterday to test and help fine tune the new Supersport Mk2. Craig is fresh off his successful 2014 season driving a Porsche 911 GT America in the IMSA GTD class.  In the off season Craig is a recognized driving coach and test driver. We were extremely lucky that Craig was able to fit us into his busy schedule.

After taking the Supersport Mk2 out a few minor changes were made according to Craig’s feedback.

Some of Craig’s thoughts?  ” Over time I’ve driven a lot of crap.  It’s so fun to drive a really good race car”,  “You’ve got a really neat thing here”, and  “This car is magic!”

We really enjoyed having Craig drive the car.  When we set out to develop the Mk2 we set some lofty goals.

1. Performance equal to a Porsche GT3 Supercup car.

2. Purchase price less than half that of the Porsche.

3. Running costs of 10 cents on the dollar compared to the Porsche.

It has been really satisfying that with the help of great professional drivers like Craig Stanton and Stu Hayner we are achieving all of our goals.

A couple more minor changes to the car are in development.  A larger intercooler for more safe power and some tweaking to the shocks. After those changes are made watch out! This car is a weapon!

We are looking forward to the upcoming 2015 racing season as plans are coming together for our works team as well as customer teams.  2015, the year of the Supersport Mk2!

We are located on the entrance road to the Willow Springs International Raceway so if you are coming out to the track please make sure to stop by and check out the Supersport Mk2!

“HOLY CRAP!” - Cal Kalishek

Cal Kalishek, owner of Supersport chassis #008 visited Willow Springs Raceway to test drive the new Supersport Mk2.

Cal has put quite a few miles on his original Supersport, both at Hallet, his home track in Oklahoma and Road America where he competes annually with his brother and other family members. Driving coach Allan Crocket was brought in to assist Cal in quickly coming up to speed on the Big Willow course. Not only did Cal have to learn a new track but he also had to familiarize himself with the new level of horsepower and paddle shifted transmission in the all new Mk2.

After a couple of lead follow laps, Cal was getting the feel of the incredibly quick up and down shifts and beginning to get a good sense of the increased horsepower and torque of the Mk2.

The new XAP steering wheel display was a favorite. Cal really liked the visibility of the shift light bars and gear indicator.

After a debrief session with Allan, Cal was ready for more!

Cal’s impression of the new Supersport Mk2? “HOLY CRAP!! Driving this is like going from riding a horse to jumping on a tiger!”. We think he liked it!

We heard from Cal in his own words:

“Just returned home from testing the Supersport Mk2 demo car, chassis #005 at Willow Springs race track, Rosamond, California. All I can say is “WOW” what a tiger. Upgraded turbo, brakes, steering, wheels, tires, transmission, and electronics. The 3MOP sequential transmission and 420 wheel horsepower transforms the driving experience. Car leaps forward with each full power paddle shift gear change. Auto blip downshifts were so smooth I had to check XAP steering wheel readout to verify the gear change. My Supersport chassis #008 is currently being upgraded to Mk2 standard. Will keep you posted upon completion.”

Cal’s Supersport is undergoing upgrading to the Mk2 specs and he can’t wait to turn it loose on Hallet!

Supersport Mk2 Rotating Weight Improvements

There is an old adage in racing concerning parts weight that goes like this, “Light, strong, cheap, you can only pick two”. The Supersport having been designed with strength and safety as the main priorities was admittedly not the lightest car on the market.  At approximately 2300 pounds it is lighter than the IMSA GT cars so it is not heavy by any stretch.  Rotating weight is an area of particular concern on any race car.  The energy required to speed up or slow down the rotating weight can have a measurable effect on overall performance.

Two areas that have received particular attention in developing the Supersport Mk2 are the brake rotor and wheel combination and the clutch and flywheel package.

First the brakes.  Everybody that has driven the Supersport has been impressed with the braking performance.  The large 6 piston Wilwood front calipers and the 4 piston Wilwood rear calipers provide plenty of stopping power.  Brake control is positive and no fading was ever experienced.  The one fault that appeared was premature rear rotor wear.  We decided to improve the brakes by using Wilwood’s Premium Spec 37 iron discs mounted on aluminum hats. The new Wilwood discs are a very high quality material providing better cooling and have the added benefit of being lighter than the original rotors previously used. The front rotors are 4.8 pounds lighter and the rears are 2.2 pounds lighter.  Coupled with the new larger but lighter wheels the total savings in rotating weight is 15.8 pounds.  This savings has a cost but we chose light and strong over inexpensive and heavy.

Secondly, the clutch and flywheel.  With the change to the 3 MO Performance transmission a change to the clutch and flywheel was necessary.  The original OE flywheel on the LNF engine weighed a whopping 32.4 pounds.  We had already changed to an aluminum flywheel that with the OE type clutch brought the weight down to 21.6 pounds.  Now by again choosing strong and light over inexpensive and heavy the new one piece steel racing flywheel and Alcon clutch weigh only 14.4 pounds. This weight savings is all rotating weight at engine speeds.  The huge reduction in MOI will have a measurable effect on the performance of the Supersport Mk2.

The final touches are being put on the Supersport Mk2. Appointments to test drive this amazing new car are available!

Supersport Mk2 Development Update

The Mk2 development of the Supersport started with the need to improve the driving experience and do away with the unsatisfactory shifting and performance caused by the OE GM 5 speed synchromesh transmission.

With the decision to switch to a proper racing transmission, the 3MOP dog engaged sequentially shifted 6 speed, it only made sense to include no lift upshifts which lead to auto blip downshifts, and then paddle shift controls. There was no way this could be achieved with the OE electronics. We began our search for a true race quality ECU. After several starts and stops we have selected Life Racing to be our electronics technical partner and supplier. Life Racing is represented in the US by Chris Muzio at DanZio Performance. Chris is proving to be our ideal partner. His expertise with the Life Racing products is giving us results exceeding our expectations.

While our search for better electronics was taking place, other suppliers were continuing development on the Ecotec platform. We made the decision to change our engine supplier to ZZ Performance. ZZ Performance had begun to offer a new Gen III version of the LNF engine that has been the heart of the Supersport. The new European sourced engine uses a stronger block for more reliability, larger injectors, and a revised fuel rail. ZZ Performance adds a Borg Warner EFR turbo custom fitted to the engine and we add the ZZ Performance reground fuel pump cam to boost GDI pump output. This combination when coupled to the Life Racing ECU takes our power plant to a whole new level. We have developed two tunes which will be easily selected and included with each Supersport Mk2. The base tune running premium pump gas produced 360 hp at 6500 rpm and 305 lb./ft. of torque at 4700 rpm. The high output tune which requires using VP MS-109 fuel makes 430 hp at 6400 rpm and 385 lb./ft. at 5000 rpm. Both tunes are incredibly safe with a large margin of safety. The engine simply runs and feels like a true race engine while still being easy to operate while driving around the pits.

The Life Racing ECU is also handling the transmission control commanded by the new XAP Electronique steering wheel, fitted with carbon paddles actuated by the XAP E-Shift 2 electronic actuator. This new package using these top of the line racing suppliers is giving the Supersport Mk2 the feel of driving a highly refined true GT race car.

“Performance on par with a GT3 Super Cup car for less than half the price and 10 cents on the dollar costs to operate” is our mantra for 999 Motorsports USA. The Supersport Mk2 is achieving our goals.

Test drives for prospective buyers begin at the end of July. Contact 999 Motorsports USA to experience the thrill of our year long project, offering the best driving experience and the best value in racing.

Supersport Runs Road America!

Supersport owner Cal Kalishek loaded up his car and traveled to Road America for three fun days running the iconic three mile track located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.  Cal’s brothers Rob and Charlie and Rob’s sons Nick and Kurt all brought their track day cars, making it a family reunion as well!

Cal choose to run with Group 2, a V-8 powered group so that he could run against his brother in an ex-Bondurant Mustang Cobra. He reported that there were three Cobra kit cars in the group and the Supersport blew the doors off of each one of them. As Cal put it “Three days of high speed thrashing around Road America’s three miles turned out great!”.

Needless to say, it’s great to see Supersport owners out running hard for three days and having a great time!

999 Motorsports Visits AMP to Tune and Service Supersports

Jackson and Melinda Stewart of 999 Motorsports visited Atlanta Motorsports Park April 9-14th, 2013 to tune and service the Supersports bought by customers at that track.

IMG_3998

Over the last few months data collected by the owners Jeremy Porter and John Daniel showed that the AMP track requires a different chassis tune than the development tracks used in the west.  Each car received a new spring package and complete re-set-up of all the suspension settings.

IMG_4014

The cars had an opportunity to briefly run together on Thursday.  Some additional adjustments were made for the Saturday Member Day, with Jeremy Porter setting a new fast lap for a Supersport at 1:26.50. When exiting the car Jeremy exclaimed “This car is freaking awesome!”.  Although not quite as experienced as Jeremy with race cars and karts, John was amazed at what a difference a relatively small amount of tuning changes could make in a real race car.  “It’s just a day and night difference in the way the car handles and drives” he said upon exiting the car after the first session.

IMG_4232

Jackson was extremely happy with how well the Supersports responded to set-up changes and given how predictable the cars are is very confident that it will be easy for customers to tune and extract the maximum performance from the car at their home tracks.

IMG_4211

It was really fun to watch the two cars on track together, kicking butt on cars costing many thousands of dollars more! Melinda Stewart, photographer for 999 Motorsports USA, was amazed once again at how fun the atmosphere and people at the track are and also how beautiful the setting is. The progress they have made with their facility in the last few months was exciting to see.

Catch 1

The Supersport and the NA Car of the Year Cadillac ATS

The Supersport Shares it’s Heart with the 2013 North American Car of the Year Cadillac ATS!

Both the Supersport and the Cadillac ATS use variants of the highly refined General Motors Ecotec series of engines.

Cad 1

The Supersport’s 2.0L direct injected turbo engine with a bore and stroke of 86 mm, dubbed the LNF, is tuned to make 345 hp and 330 lb.-ft. torque.  The Ecotec in the Cadillac ATS sharing the same specifications, dubbed the LT6, is tuned for street use at 272 hp and 260 lb.-ft. torque.

Cad 2

The Ecotec engine family is a highly refined group of engines used world wide in a variety of vehicles by a variety of manufacturers. Featuring high specific output and robust construction the LNF has proven very reliable both in street use and in racing use, having been used in the highly successful Chevrolet Cobalt racing in Grand Am’s endurance series. The engine is the perfect choice to provide ample power and reliability to the Supersport!

Engine, Clutch, and Transmission Installation

After the cars are plumbed, wired, and the brakes and fuel cells added, the brand new General Motors 2.0 liter, turbocharged, direct injected LNF engine is installed in the car by our very experienced racing technicians.

An sequential dogbox is also available as an option when purchasing the car or as an upgrade at a later date.

Supersport Safety Part 2

In addition to the safety features of the chassis covered in an earlier post, driver safety and comfort are top priorities in the Supersport.  OMP USA products are used throughout the cockpit of the car.

SS part 2 1

Standard equipment on the Supersport is a very nice OMP USA HTE seat which provides good lateral support and head protection.  The seat is adjustable but is bolted in place to do away with unsafe sliding brackets.

SS part 2 2

We also use OMP USA seat belts which are designed for use with a HANS device.

The fire suppression system is also provided by OMP USA and is oversized. The bottle is mounted in the cockpit near the driver with the activation mechanism within easy reach on the dash.

SS part 2 4

The fire retardant is fed through five nozzles.  Two are in the cockpit pointed at the driver.

SS part 2 5

Three nozzles are directed in the engine compartment to quickly extinguish an engine fire.

SS part 2 6

All nozzles are fed through aluminum tubing for maximum protection.

SS part 2 7

An OMP steering wheel with a Woodward quick release hub mounted on a Woodward collapsible steering column provide good steering feel and safety.  In addition to the added safety features, the positioning of the driver in the middle of the car gives the maximum amount of crush zone around the driver in case of side impact.

First delivered 8

After the successful test drive, the car was loaded on the trailer and Calvin and Rob headed out, intent on getting the new car into Cal’s garage as soon as possible. We believe the grin on his face was still there as he passed through Albuquerque!

We at 999 Motorsports USA would like to thank Calvin for his patience and firm belief that the Supersport was the car of his dreams. It was a pleasure getting to know both Calvin and Rob and we welcome them into the Supersport family!

Supersport Safety

Safety and quality are important aspects of the Supersport design and construction.

SS safety 1

Beginning with a clean sheet design the purpose built tube frame chassis is way over built, using over sized tubing and extensive gusseting. This creates a very safe and stiff drivers cockpit.

SS safety 2

SS safety 3

An FIA front nose crash box adds an additional level of safety during front end collisions.

SS safety 4

The rear tubular support structure for the rear bumper cover provides rear end crash protection as well as a solid mounting point for the rear wing and tow hook.

With the center seat design which provides for considerable side impact space the overall result is one of the truly safest race cars available today.

Fuel Safe Fuel Cell Installation

Safety and quality are two hallmarks of the Supersport. We use a Fuel Safe FIA FT3 Certified fuel cell in all Supersports.

The custom made bladder assembly includes an in-cell fuel pump, and a fuel level probe using a custom made access plate. The cell holds 14.5 gallons.

The fuel cell is also compatible with not only pump gas and racing gas but also E85 which is used to fuel our higher horsepower engine tuning option.

The fuel cell is mounted in a custom aluminum enclosure including a double wall filler assembly.

The standard filler cap uses a 1/4 turn latch assembly mounted in a standard size plate which can accommodate double dry brake assemblies for endurance racing.

Plumbing and Wiring the Supersport

Plumbing and wiring are commonly overlooked details that ultimately show up as reliability issues if not done properly.

On the Supersport we use factory assembled premade hoses from Goodridge USA. All Goodridge hoses use crimped fittings and are pressure tested before being packaged in kits for assembly on the Supersport.

Even the brake lines are manufactured by Goodridge USA using the highest quality components.

Wiring when done properly can be ultimately reliable. How often have you heard of a DNF caused by the proverbial 25 cent connector? All the wiring on the Supersport is carefully assembled using Delphi GT280 series connectors and all harnesses are heat shrink sleeved.

The harness for the RLC Datalogger Dash is custom made by RLC for the Supersport and is also constructed of the highest quality heat shrink and Deutsch DT Series connectors.

All of this makes for true plug and play serviceability and a very reliable package.

Wilwood Brakes

An important aspect of the Supersport is the use of high quality products, many of which are manufactured in the United States.

Assembling the Supersport in the US we add a complete Wilwood brake package. The package uses massive 6 piston front calipers and 4 piston rear calipers.

The floor mounted adjustable pedal assembly uses a dual master cylinder set up, also from Wilwood, that provides driver adjustability of the brake bias.

We also choose to use a very affordable brake pad package from Wilwood that is proving to offer very long wear with mininal wear to the rotors.

The overall feeling when driving the Supersport is that the brakes are simply phenomenal!

Brand New GM Ecotec Engines

The Supersports have arrived from the factory at 999 Motorsports. We will take you through the steps that 999 Motorsports USA goes through to complete the cars and deliver them to their new owners.

The powerplant is the General Motors Ecotec 2.0 liter LNF engine. We use brand new, from the factory engines in our cars. The photo shows the three engines and transmissions as they are uncrated and awaiting final prep and installation.

A potential customer toured our facility, saw the engines lined up and commented that he assumed we would be using junkyard engines, not brand new powerplants. All the components used on the Supersport are brand new, from the factory parts. Even the bolts used to attach the accessories to the engine are General Motors OEM bolts, ordered by the GM part number. We could save a bunch of money buying bolts from the national giant hardware supplier but they would not be exactly what is called for by General Motors.

As we proceed through the assembly process we will show the high level of quality of parts as well as quality of construction of the Supersport!

Container Delivery Day!

A container of Supersports arrived at 999 Motorsports USA last week. After the manufacturer 999 Motorsports finishes the cars, they are loaded 3 to a container and shipped to the Port of Los Angeles. After clearing customs they are delivered to 999 Motorsports USA for final assembly before delivery to their new owners. All of these cars are sold and will be in the hands of their owners very shortly! Follow along as the cars are offloaded and readied for final assembly.

Stu Hayner Clocks a 1:28.740 Lap!

Professional race car driver Stu Hayner stopped by Willow Springs Raceway and took the Supersport out for a ride. He turned in a great lap of 1:28.740 on a 98 degree, hot, dusty, breezy day. In other words, a typical Willow day! This was the first opportunity Stu has had to drive the car since our recent round of development and improvements. He found the car to be easy to drive and confidence inspiring. View the hot lap video, complete with data and inset roof cam.

Hahn Super 20G Mitsubishi Turbo Installed

As we announced back in June, the Supersport now comes with the Hahn RaceCraft Super 20G Mitsubishi turbocharger as standard equipment. This is a larger turbo than the stock GM LNF turbo and will allow the car to be run with the option of selecting the standard 300 horsepower tune or upgrade to a 400+ horsepower tune.

The new turbo fit beautifully into the existing engine and chassis layout of the Supersport. Trifecta Performance is continuing to provide the tunes for both horsepower levels.

Now it’s off to the dyno next week!

Supersport GTX Unleash The Beast!

The Supersport has proven to be such a reliable and robust platform we have decided to upgrade the standard Supersport to create a Supersport GTX and go after the Porsche GT3 Supercup cars! Conceived to compete head to head on the race track the Supersport GTX is 400 pounds lighter than the Porsche, has more horsepower, more aero, a stronger and safer chassis and is half the price! Supersport 1000 Test Miles Report

Supersport chassis 005, the 999 Motorsports USA demo car, has now run over 1000 miles. Forty or so different people have driven the car. Aside from a few teething problems mostly associated with the use of the GM LNF engine in a stand alone application, the Supersport has been totally reliable.

One area that did cause an issue was the rear steering arms and toe links. The parts are being redesigned and the specification of the toe link rod ends has been improved to permanently correct the issue.

The following are the consumables that were used during this first 1000 miles of track use:

TIRES:

As tires wore lap times were unusually consistent. 2 sets of tires were used for a total cost of $2,850.00

FUEL:

The Supersport is getting 5.18 miles per gallon average. Fuel cost was $4.299/gallon using 91 octane pump gas. Total fuel cost $829.71

BRAKES:

Front pads were 85% consumed and rear pads are about 15% consumed. Rotors look brand new. Total cost of one set of front pads was $180.00

We are a bit overkill when it comes to brake bleeding, but we still only used 2 bottles of Wilwood fluid and always had a firm brake pedal. Never experienced any fade or fluid boiling. Total cost of fluid $40.50

ENGINE:

After tuning issues were corrected the engine has run over 600 miles flawlessly, needing only an oil and filter change. We use Mobil 1. The engine did not use any oil or develop any leaks. Total cost of oil and filter $66.93.

TRANSMISSION:

The transmission has performed perfectly and when we changed the oil the magnet was clean and the oil looked good and clean. We use Redline MT90. Total cost of oil $26.97.

TOTAL:

The total cost for all consumables was $3994.11. Tires have accounted for about 70% of the total expense of running the car 1000 miles. The cost per mile is $3.99. The cost per hour, averaging 80 miles per hour, is $319.52.

After a thorough clean up and inspection the car still appears new.

Supersport Now Delivered With Larger Turbo

Feedback from customers and potential customers told us that upon recognizing the incredible potential of the Supersport they wanted the option of more horsepower.

Partnering with Hahn RaceCraft and our tuning partner Trifecta Performance, we have decided that delivering Supersports with the Hahn developed Super 20G Mitsubishi Turbo Upgrade both fulfills our mandate to maintain unbelievable reliability and offers customers the option to unlock some of the enormous power potential of the LNF 2.0 Ecotec turbo.

As delivered and used in the Supersport Spec Racing Series the Supersport will still make 300 RWHP. This output level provides incredible reliability and low maintenance. These traits are the cornerstones of the Supersport design.

Customers now may choose to give up some of that reliability to have 400+ RWHP available when desired. 999 Motorsports USA offers a $999.00 upgrade kit that allows a customer with a laptop to select either the standard 300 RWHP level or the 400+ RWHP level. The change from one level to the other takes less than 20 minutes and customers can elect to change back and forth at will.

The Supersport Visits Atlanta Motorsports Park!

999 Motorsports USA was invited by Jeremy Porter, owner of the brand new Atlanta Motorsports Park, to bring the Supersport to the track and demo it over the Memorial Day weekend. His Motorsports country club members were very interested in the Supersport and how it would perform at the new track. We arrived Saturday morning to a large crowd gathered to see the car! We unloaded it, and had pro driver David Murry take the Supersport out for some recon laps to check the set up for the new track. A few adjustments were made and the demo rides began!

Over 20 members climbed in the cockpit over the three days to feel for themselves the thrill of the Supersport! Many members were not satisfied with just one drive, but jumped in again when the line permitted. A good number of the members had no experience in a true racecar, so they took a little extra time to get the feel of the car. Everyone, from novice to experienced racer emerged from the cockpit sweaty but with a huge grin on their face! Member Kevin Clifford, an experienced pro level racer, was able to really put the Supersport through it’s paces recording a fast lap of 1:29.127.

The track is located about 50 miles north of Atlanta and when finished will be a wonderful destination. Plans include a clubhouse, pool, tennis court, in addition to over 200 member garages. The track itself is a technical 16 turns, with a huge amount of elevation changes. The pine woods of Georgia provide a beautiful setting for this family oriented facility.

Jeremy Porter has purchased a Supersport for himself and expects to see many more members racing each other around the track in their own Supersports! It is truly the perfect car for this application. We were able to run the car all day for three consecutive days, doing nothing more than adding fuel and doing a nut and bolt check each evening. Over 500 miles were put on the tires before the right rear started to show too much wear. The car is built to run all day, put it away, run all day, put away, and repeat. Andy Gilberg, a member with considerable racing experience in both modern and vintage racing, found it amazing that the car ran reliably for three solid days. Race cars never do that but this one does!

999 Motorsports USA would like to sincerely thank Jeremy Porter and his entire staff at the Atlanta Motorsports Park for inviting us to his fine facility. For complete information on the track, go to www.atlantamotorsportspark.net.

Supersport Test Drive Video

Professional race car driver Dane Moxlow and his father Dave flew out to Willow Springs from their home in Michigan to test drive the Supersport. This was Danes first visit to the big track at Willow Springs, known as the “Fastest Road in the West”. After getting a feel for the 2.5 mile road course Dane really began to push the car and lower his lap times.

Jackson Stewart downloaded data from the RLC Racing dash and went over every aspect of the laps with Dane. The video footage from the GoPro is overlaid with the data from that session, allowing the driver to see exactly where any improvements or changes can be made. Both the GoPro camera and RLC Racing Pro X Datalogging Dash System are standard equipment on the Supersport.

Check out the video to see exactly what fun you can have test driving a Supersport!

Supersport Dyno Video

Supersport on the dyno at Road Race Engineering.

Supersport Dyno Report

As one of the final steps in the development program for the Supersport, the car was taken down to Road Race Engineering and put on their Dynapack chassis dyno to accurately measure exactly what kind of horsepower and torque the GM Ecotec 2.0L engine is putting out in the current trim. The results of the Dyno tests were outstanding!

We have been working with Trifecta Performance to develop a more powerful and reliable tune for the engine. The dyno results show that we have achieved all of our goals and more. The engine put out 293 rwhp at 5200 rpm. The engine has a nice broad flat torque curve producing over 300 lb.-ft. of torque from 2800 to 5000 rpm with a peak of 339 lb.-ft. at 4100 rpm.

We have established a shift point of 5700 rpm and redline of 6000 rpm so the stresses on the engine are low, insuring a long engine life span.

Thanks to Mike Welch of Road Race Engineering for the excellent dyno job!

Development Update

Development has continued on the Supersport and the car has started to exceed our expectations! We have very nearly set the production specifications for the new car. So far, no changes have been made to any basic designs. The car has responded very well to all of our basic modifications including springs, shocks, steering ratio, brake cylinder size, toe, and ride.

The following improvements have been made to the Supersport:

  • Change to Hyperco Springs at USA rates.
  • Change to Woodward steering rack, safety column, and quick release.
  • Change to spec Goodridge USA factory assembled and pressure tested plumbing.
  • Change to smaller Wilwood master cylinders and Wilwood 600 brake fluid.
  • Change to USA developed engine ECU programming.
  • Change to internal fuel cell plumbing to improve fuel delivery at low fuel levels.
  • Change to Aasco Performance lightweight clutch and flywheel package.

Supersport Takes On Chuckwalla Valley Raceway

999 Motorsports USA received an invitation from the owners of the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway to attend one of their Members Get Members Events to demo the Supersport for their members. What a great facility they have built in the desert, about one hour east of Palm Springs. Most people think the track is in the middle of nowhere, but as they like to say it is in the middle of everywhere! 3 hours from Los Angeles, 3 hours from Las Vegas, and 3 hours from Phoenix. We were really lucky to find beautiful 80 degree temps and zero wind. The hospitality shown to us was just fantastic. Friendly, interested members, a very tasty catered lunch, and a fun track made for a great day. Do yourself a favor and check out their website, www.chuckwallavalleyraceway.com, or better yet go out to the track! Thank you Chuckwalla, we will be back soon.

In addition to introducing the car to the members and guests, we used this opportunity to further fine tune the set-up on the car. Changes that our professional driver Stu Hayner had requested were completed and the Supersport was ready to go again. Stu took to the track and was immediately happy. Much easier to drive, much better feedback, and much, much more mechanical grip made Stu a happy driver. ” This car was fun to drive right out of the box, but now it is great and I feel very comfortable pushing it. It is giving me much better feedback and I feel that it is now ready for anyone to jump into the drivers seat and really enjoy this full on, real racecar”, said Stu.

Steve Ruiz of Stop Tech and his sons were attending the Members day, running their car on the twisty 17 turn course. Son Steven decided to take the Supersport out for a test drive and was very enthusiastic about the car. “This is a FUN car!!” summed up his feedback! If time had permitted he would still be out there, but several members had requested a test drive and the line was getting long.

Because some members did not get a chance to demo the Supersport we will be taking it back to Chuckwalla in the near future to give everyone who wants to a chance to get into the car. Next up we have scheduled test drives coming up at our home track of Willow Springs International Raceway.

Check out the Photo Gallery from Chuckwalla Valley Raceway HERE.

Pro Driver Stu Hayner Tests the Supersport

Wednesday, January 18th professional driver Stu Hayner took the Supersport on track at Willow Springs to put it through it’s paces and conduct a thorough evaluation of every aspect of the car.

Stu ran laps for about 80 miles around the high speed Big Willow course with absolutely no issues and total reliability. ” The car is really fun to drive. I identified a couple of minor chassis tuning items that the crew will work on before I take it out again next week” said Hayner.

Undeniably a head-turner, the Supersport attracts a lot of attention every time it hits the track. Many participants of the OTR Track Day investigated the new car up close! Click HERE to see the Photo Gallery of the test day with Stu Hayner.

Stay tuned for the next update after continued testing at Big Willow next week.

Exciting News From Supersport Debut at PRI

The Supersport debut at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Orlando was an eye opener for everyone involved. For the consumer, the ability to purchase a racecar of the quality of the Supersport for $67,500.00 was a bit of a mind blower. For us, the sellers of the car, the response to the car was exactly what we hoped and knew it would be. All who looked at the car, from the most inexperienced to the racing veteran, were impressed with the sophistication, engineering, fit, and finish of the car. The folks at RLC Racing installed their incredible dash in the car at the show, impressing everyone who sat in the car with the brilliant display, data logging capabilities, and sheer coolness of the unit! The ability to have the dash send real time data to an iPhone or iPad in the pits is a huge benefit to drivers looking to improve their set ups and times.

As a result of the show, we have fourteen pending orders for the Supersport! Buyers from the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic have begun to schedule their test drives at our home track, Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond California. The first test drives are booked for the first week of January. We will have a page on the website dedicated to test drive scheduling, with the available dates and times. Stay tuned for that in the coming days.

One of the most often asked questions at the show was “Where can I run this car?” We are pleased to announce an agreement has been worked out with the North American Road Racing Association (NARRA) to participate in their USGT Championship in 2012! Their 8 race schedule includes bucket list tracks such as Road America, Watkins Glen, and Road Atlanta. They are known for putting on high quality events, complete with TV, print, and web exposure guaranteed! We plan on attending each event with a fully loaded parts trailer to support our Supersport owners. In the next few weeks we will announce more details concerning the Supersport Series! Owners wishing to run in their local areas can run in the NASA STR2 division. Check your local NASA region for 2012 schedules. In addition to these opportunities, the Supersport is the ultimate track day car. Many motorsport country club members are talking about setting up races between country clubs!
